Mark your calendars for the largest UBC CSSS end-of-the-year event! We’re happy to bring it back this year after being on hiatus since 2019! The event will be held at the UBC Boathouse on April 5, from 6 pm - 11 pm. Ticket sales will begin on March 9th at 10 am!

Early bird pricing will start at $40 (plus the Eventbrite ticket fee) and will end on March 21st at 11:59 pm. After that, ticket prices will be $50 (plus the Eventbrite ticket fee) until registration closes at 11:59 pm on March 30th. Make sure you claim your spot as soon as possible as seats are limited!

After purchasing your ticket, please fill out this Google Form to select your menu option and seating preferences. Please also submit the same email address that was used to purchase the ticket so we can link them together.

Tickets are heavily subsidized by the UBC CSSS and will include a 4-course plated dinner with an open bar, fun activities, a DJ, and a Photo Booth so make sure you come dressed up in semi-formal attire!

Unfortunately, given the move to online graduation, it is clear that we have no choice but to cancel this year’s Year-End Gala. We recognize this will be disheartening news to many of you (myself included), particularly those graduating wanting to celebrate our time at UBC surrounded by the people with whom we’ve struggled together through undergrad and to whom we’ve grown close.

We’re putting aside some of the money that we would have spent on the gala and looking for a way to commemorate the graduating class. In lieu of memories of one last night together, we want to give something that will serve to remind us of our shared experience. You will receive your full refund, the refund process will proceed in the next couple of days. For those who purchased group tickets, the cumulative amount will be refunded to the buyer of the tickets. If you have any questions or encountered any difficulties during the refund process, do not hesitate to reach out to us. Preferably through Facebook page, as our email server is down.

And if I might step off the official-voice-pedestal for a moment here – I want to express my gratitude to the community. Throughout my five years around computer science, it’s amazed me how many wonderful people seem to appear at every turn, and I know there are so many more I’ve never had the pleasure of meeting. Those of you who come with fresh ideas, new energy, and unending drive to better the student community and the department, thank you. And those of you who bring warmth, friendliness, and a genial word, thank you. And those who bring just your presence and your attention, thank you. You are all invaluable to making this department what it is. These are turbulent times; still, I know that next year, regardless of what happens, we will be here aiming to support you in whatever capacity you need. I hope we continue to further the goal of welcoming everyone with open arms, encouraging and edifying each other, and serving as your little beacon and refuge when it comes to navigating computer science student life.

If you have any questions about the CSSS or would like to give input about the club and discuss club matters, this is a great opportunity to do so. Our executives will be sharing reports on their activities over the past few months, as well as soliciting feedback on the direction the club should take.

Due to mounting concerns around the COVID-19 pandemic, we have decided that we cannot hold the CSSS Year-End Gala on April 9th, 2020 as planned. From your feedback and after much deliberation, we are postponing the Year-End Gala tentatively until graduation date (around May 25th). This is two months from the current date, and we are hopeful that the landscape may change enough so that we can hold the event in good conscience. We recognize that this is a sad and frustrating situation for many of you, especially those of you who are graduating this year and dearly wished to celebrate a sendoff amongst friends and loved ones found during your time here. Rest assured, we are equally devastated that we cannot celebrate with you all this April.

However, we value your health and safety above all, and we recognize that proceeding with the original plan would be irresponsible and dangerously dismissive of the reality that we must all seriously take precautions to alleviate the spread of the virus. For the good of the community, we urge you to stay home, adopt regular habits of hand-washing, and practice social distancing.

_ TICKET LOGISTICS _

Those who currently have tickets and are still interested in potentially attending the gala at a future date is encouraged to hold on to the ticket until that date, as with each purchase the CSSS is absorbing the process fees. However, if you are uncomfortable with that or you can not attend the gala at a different date, as always YOU MAY RECEIVE A FULL REFUND ANYTIME, regardless if the event is cancelled, postponed, or ongoing. As for those that have purchased group tickets with some members no longer attending and some members intending to hold on to their tickets, we will refund the no longer attending individuals while the remaining can keep their tickets without paying any extra. We also recognize that it is very possible large gatherings will still be inadvisable at that time. If the Gala is not held by graduation, we will likely have to cancel. We are actively looking into ways to signify and preserve the legacy of the 2020 graduating class, using the Gala budget, should we ultimately cancel; this may be in the form of a bursary, significant facility upgrades, or another symbolic gift. If this course of action comes to pass, we will be making further inquiries into the most appropriate and meaningful ways to spend the funds. Either way, we want to make sure you will still be able to celebrate your years with UBC CS for many years to come.
